Hernry Darrow - Lightning in a Bottle Book
Henry Darrow's versatility as an actor has garnered him one of the most enduring careers in Hollywood over the last 50 years. His work in theater, television, movies and voice over has not only entertained millions worldwide but endeared him to multiple generations of fans. His rise to fame began in the 1960s television western series The High Chaparral as the strong willed vaquero Manolito Montoya. His impact with viewers was immediate. Latino's were inspired by his fiery character, boys and men related to his bravado and to women he became a heartthrob. His portrayal as Zorro in both The New Adventures of Zorro cartoon and the Zorro and Son live action series marked him as the first Latino to play the masked hero on television. In the 1990s he played Alejandro de la Vega, the father of Zorro, in the New World Zorro series. He even donned the mask as Zorro in one episode making him the only man to ever play the role of Zorro in three different series. Darrow won an Emmy for his role on the soap opera Santa Barbara and was recently honored with an ALMA award for Lifetime Achievement. Between starring roles he's guest starred on hundreds of the top TV shows of their time. You may recall some of his appearances on shows such as Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The New Dick Van Dyke Show, Hawaii Five-O, Dallas, Dynasty, Magnum P.I., Simon & Simon, Silk Stalkings, Knight Rider, Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Voyager, T.J. Hooker, The Golden Girls, Diagnosis Murder, Hart to Hart, Quincy M.E., The Incredible Hulk, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, or Vegas. And the list goes on and on. Pick a program from 1965-2000 and it's likely Henry made a guest appearance. His abilities as an actor had him in high demand with casting directors and audiences alike. Now he's written a book detailing his life on and off screen. The accounts are as fascinating as his career. Every page and every story not only give insight into this wonderful man and actor but leave a smile indelibly imprinted on the readers mind.

Henry Darrow Award ALMA Lifetime Achievement Award
ALMA Awards Honor Wilmington Resident Henry Darrow
Respected
veteran actor Henry Darrow received the prestigious Ricardo Montalbán Lifetime
Achievement Award at the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) gala ALMA Awards on
September 16, 2012 the in Pasadena, California. The star-studded packed house
at the Pasadena Civic Center gave Darrow a standing ovation.
Darrow has thrilled
TV, stage and movie audiences while breaking ground for Latinos throughout his
career of over fifty years. In a time when most TV and film Latinos were
stereotyped as comic foils or bandidos,
Darrow blazed a new trail as the handsome vaquero
Manolito Montoya in the landmark western The High Chaparral (1967-1971). As Manolito, he was the first
Latino star in a dramatic series. Manhatten-born Darrow (given name Enrique
Tomas Delgado) was also the first actor of Puerto Rican descent to star in a
network series. The role of Manolito catapulted him to international fame.
Of
Manolito, Darrow said in his recently published biography, “I am happy to have
given Latin Americans a hero they can identify with.”
In 1970, he
joined with Ricardo Montalbán
and others to form NOSOTROS, the first Latino entertainment and arts advocacy
organization in the nation. Darrow served as the organization’s first
vice-president. As a leader of NOSOTROS, Darrow encouraged the networks to
create realistic portrayals of Latinos on screen and to hire more Latinos both
in front of the cameras and on production crews. His activism continued in the
years after NOSOTROS as he worked to enhance the visibility of Latino actors
through the Screen Actors’ Guild (SAG) and other Los Angeles area community
organizations. A strong promoter for his beloved Puerto Rico, he was
instrumental in establishing SAG in Puerto Rico.
Darrow’s
monumental body of work encompasses starring roles and continued firsts as a
Latino actor. For his portrayal of suave Rafael Castillo in the daytime drama Santa Barbara, he received an Emmy
Award; he was the first Latino to be so honored. He was also the first Latino
to portray Zorro and starred in a record-breaking three TV Zorro series – twice as Zorro and once as the father of Zorro.
While in California
to receive his ALMA award, Henry Darrow was the guest of honor at the Autry
National Center in Los Angeles where he signed copies of his critically
acclaimed biography, “Henry Darrow: Lightning in the Bottle.” A second book signing
took place at Kumaras Center for the Arts in Burbank.
Henry
Darrow and his wife Lauren Levian have lived in Wilmington since 2002.

Duncan Regehr ART
Are you a museum or art gallery looking for an artist to feature? Then we would like to recommend Duncan Regehr to you. Duncan's artwork is found in some of the finest museums and collections around the world.
Mr. Regehr's typical method of working is to develop a series of paintings, sculptures, drawings and writings that project a common theme or philosophy. He formulates his own oils to produce jewel-like colours and multiple layers of glazed pigment which distinguish his paintings. His technique of scumbling and scraping in order to bring forth an image, can be likened to the process of therapeutically peeling back layers of the psyche and the imagination in order to expose truth.

Henry Darrow - Lightning in the Bottle Book Review
Henry Darrow – Lightning in the Bottle
By Jan Pippins
Copyright 2012
BearManor Media Publishing
Book Review
By: Gary Ledoux / Author: Nantan: The Life and Times of John P. Clum Part 1 and 2 and Tombstone Tales
I will start with a confession; I only saw snippets of The High Chaparral when it was on television in prime time. I don’t think I ever saw a complete episode. Thank goodness for You Tube. Otherwise I would have missed completely the acting ability and strong stage presence of actor Henry Darrow, aka Manolito Montoya.
Manolito was Darrow’s character in High Chaparral, his first real break in the acting business. It was a character that not only put him on everyone’s radar screen, including Hollywood luminaries, it kept him there long after the show ended, ever-continuing to spur has career forward.
Henry Darrow’s story, told lovingly, and in great detail by author Jan Pippins, starts on the streets of New York. It follows a young Puerto Rican kid, Henry Delgado full of fears and ambitions, to the Pasadena Playhouse in California and then on to Hollywood. The story follows Darrow to an Arizona movie set, through family and other loves in his life, through his name change (from Delgado to Darrow) and his interaction with so many actors and actresses. The story reads like an “A” list of television stars of the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s. The tale is rich, not only with Darrow’s trials and triumphs, but gives an up-close and personal look at the Hollywood television and movie business of those times, and what it was like to be a Latino actor during that period.
Sometimes, the reader finds the book leaning a little towards hagiography. But after reading the book and discovering, despite his human frailty, what a kind and generous man – and what a strong actor Darrow is, it becomes plain that author Jan Pippins wrote this book from the heart. Later discovering that Pippins has known Darrow personally for years, the admiration she has for Henry Darrow is more than warranted, and flows through the pages.
I walked away from this book with an greater appreciation of Henry Darrow, the man and actor, and a better understanding of the world of TV and movies in the 60’s – 80’s.
I would recommend this book to any student of acting, and anyone interested in the classic TV westerns of American television. If a reader of this book is not already a fan of Henry Darrow’s, they will be by the time they reach the last page. This story rates a “Six-Gun Salute!”
